Road Tax
Are we Indians? Or are we Konkani, Kannadiga, Malayalee etc, etc.
This question is the first thing that pops up into my mind when I think about the stupid way we are governing India.
Let me elaborate with an example.
My dad decided to get a new car. The cost of the car is around 3.5lacs then we have to pay a ‘life-time’ tax of 43000 to the Karnataka state government. The problem is that we would be shifting out of Karnataka in some years, so a ‘life-time’ tax does not make sense. However the Karnataka Government does not have the provision to pay yearly tax, the money mongering pimps (politicians) who run it want only a life-time tax. The same is the condition in many other states in India.
So if I am an Indian moving around say 5 states, I would have to pay ‘life-time’ tax in those 5 states, which would be approximately half of the cost of the car. Moreover I dont find road tax legal because I dont like politicians looting my money.
If I am a Kannadiga, or for that matter a guy from any state, running around in a car ONLY inside Karnataka then I don’t have to worry about all this, I can be ignorantly living inside this fortress that they have made (Fortress Karnataka has customs duty too, in the form of entry tax…. I wish that they train their police force with militiary tactics and then declare independence from the rest of India, wouldn’t that be something wonderful).
It would not be obvious in the first place that this road-tax fact issue itself says how divided we Indians are. Our BABU pimps have made it impossible to buy a car outisde Karnataka and then bring it inside, or to buy a car inside Karnataka and take it outside.
I think the ‘Fortress Karnatka’ picture should be clear by now. It just gives you two options, either stay in Karnataka or get out.
To make it even clear consider an AP guy who has moved in to work here in Bangalore. He has to pay life time tax for his new car and his wife’s two wheeler.(That would be 30000Rs + 2000Rs)
Does one feel Indian anymore?
Not me… i dont. I am drained.
Why not an integrated nationwide Road-Fund?
Some would say that this would cause more corruption. However there is corruption everywhere. THis kind of central road fund would make the money less accessible to many people thereby preventing some corrupt officials who lay there hands on this money, So in my opinions such a centrlized Raod-Fund would be more robust to corruption.
More than the issue of corruption here it would be the feeling that I am free to drive anywhere around India. This would be a great experiecnce. Moreover people would feel that they are Indian first and then a Kannadiga or Keralite or Andhrite.
